For some people, the worst thing they can hear from their dentist is that they need a root canal. They falsely, believe that a root canal is one of the most painful procedures anyone can have done to their mouth. Today’s root canal therapy can be done painlessly and with minimal recovery time.
At the San Marino, California dental practice of Fary Yassamy, DDS, your comfort and health is important to us. If you need root canal therapy, we can provide you with the care you need so you can get on with your life.
Endodontics is the specialized branch of dentistry that diagnoses and treats injury and diseases of the pulp of the tooth. The pulp of the tooth contains the main root canals, nerves, and the branches that connect the root canals to one another. When endodontic therapy or treatment is required, the lay term is “root canal.”
A root canal is needed when infected or diseased tissue or pulp in the tooth needs to be removed. Damage, decay, or even a simple fracture may cause the pulp of the tooth to be irreparably damaged. Infection and inflammation occurs, which can be very painful. As a result, the pulp needs to be removed in order to save the tooth and restore it to a healthy state.
You will first be anesthetized so that you do not feel anything during your root canal therapy. After removing old or damaged fillings, the pulp chamber is drilled into the pulp. Any pulp that has been compromised with infection or disease is removed, and the chamber of the tooth is filled with a latex material called gutta-percha. A temporary filling may be placed over the top of the gutta-percha, which can then be replaced at a later date with a permanent filling. Using a porcelain crown to restore the tooth protects and strengthens it from further damage.
Root canals are not the fearful procedure you may have heard about. Using state-of-the-art technology, root canal therapy can quickly restore your dental health.
